Letch Lane, Carlton, Stockton.
Minister
Revd. Trevor Capstick
Carlton is a village near Stockton. We share our minister with Norton Methodist. Our chapel is one of the smallest in the circuit, but we are a very friendly and active congregation. We have a Family Service on the first Sunday of each month which is followed by a drink and a chat and on the other Sundays the children are part of our worship until after the second hymn when they go to the Sunday school. We hold regular coffee mornings which are very well supported by people from our own and the neighbouring villages. We host a Parent/Toddler group on Tuesday afternoons from 2.00pm. which is a happy if noisy time for all involved. Carlton Kids Club meet on Wednesday evenings from 6.00-7.15 providing a variety of activities for our 7-11 year olds –we even have a computer for them!
Usual service times:
Sundays 10:30am
A potted history
Methodists in Carlton worshipped in one of the village houses until 1871 when our chapel was built. The names of people who contributed to getting the chapel built are on the outside wall next to the war memorial. We have a prominent site on a sharp bend on the main road through the village.
The building is a traditional village chapel with a large pulpit at the front and pews are on steps rising to the back of the building. Over the years the building has been extended to include a vestry, Sunday School room, porch, kitchen and toilet facilities.
Our most recent changes have been the addition of disabled toilet facilities, gas central heating and additional cupboards for all the equipment needed for the Toddler and Kids Club.
Older members remember the Sunday School anniversaries at Whitsuntide followed by the Chapel outing to the coast – sometimes on the back of a lorry More recent social events include Kids Club barbeques at a members farm, services in the barn there, a church family meal at another member’s home and joint worship with the local Anglican Church.
